Our History

Southeastern Correctional Ministry (SCM) is a centrally-governed, interdenominational, volunteer, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, Christian organization dedicated to winning the lost in jails, prisons and other facilities.

SCM was chartered pursuant to the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and is a member of the American Corrections Association and the Virginia Correctional Association.

The ministry began in July of 1981 when God spoke to the hearts of Earl Powell Jr. and John D. Williams to conduct a Bible study for inmates at Nansemond Correctional Unit.

From this small but dedicated effort God has continued to anoint this ministry. SCM has expanded to 22 institutions and has over 100 volunteers serving as Chaplains, Bible teachers, counselors, course graders, literature distributors, audio/visual operators and musicians.

We feel God is going to do great things in Hampton Roads and surrounding areas through His ministry.
